Chatham Golden Eagles heading east for Canadian championships

The U15 Chatham Golden Eagles will be representing the region in Newfoundland next week for the Eastern Canadian Championships.

The Golden Eagles are coming off a Tier II A Division title win at the Provincial Women’s Softball Association of Ontario tournament last weekend.

In the championship game, Chatham defeated the Lucan-Ilderton Athletics who took home silver and will also be travelling to nationals out east.

"We were lucky to finish first and second in the U15 provincials which allowed us to qualify for the tournament out east," said Coach Jason Nisbett. "We're the first team from Chatham to go so it's special for the girls."

Team members were out fundraising Wednesday morning at the Rexall on St. Clair Street for their sponsor appreciation event.

"The cost of this tournament is quite a bit more than a regular ball tournament," said Nisbett. "The girls are appreciative of all the support they have received."

The Eastern Canadian under-15 girls’ softball championship runs from August 25 to August 28 in Portugal Cove in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"I think the girls realize this is something they're going to have for the rest of their lives," said Nisbett. "To be the first group from Chatham to represent at an event of this level is pretty special."
