Meals on Wheels CK getting new van to help with deliveries

Chatham-Kent's Meals on Wheels program is getting a new ride thanks to some grant money.

St. Andrew’s Residence and the Meals on Wheels program received a three-year grant totaling $30,000 from the Chatham Kent Community Foundation and the South Kent Wind Community Fund.

The program provides balanced and nutritious meals to people in need across Chatham-Kent.

According to Executive Director of the St. Andrew’s Residence Foundation Lynn McGeachy, the money will allow the group to purchase a new van to make meal deliveries.

The Meals on Wheels program has been in the Chatham-Kent community for over 50 years. Last year, almost 35,000 meals were served, with the help of the hundreds of volunteers.

"Never was the need more apparent than as a result of the pandemic," said McGeachy. "We were able to keep up with the demand, thanks to all who stepped into offer additional assistance. The van allows us to deliver meals throughout the Chatham Kent to communities like Blenheim, Thamesville, Tilbury, Merlin, Highgate, Ridgetown and Chatham. We are so grateful to the Community Foundation and South Kent Wind, who have helped us with the purchase of this new vehicle so that we can continue to care for the community of which we are a part."
