Chatham-Kent Plowing Match gearing up for August 13 in Blenheim

An annual tradition within the agricultural sector is gearing up to plow through a farm in Chatham.

The 85th annual event is set for August 13 at Jim DeBrouwer’s farm at 11451 Ed’s Line in Blenheim. The plowing will begin at 9:30 a.m.

"We're excited to have a normal event this year and get back to what our plowing match normally looks like year-to-year," said Event Organizer Stephanie Richardson.

The winners of each class will take home a cash prize of $75 each.

"Anyone who want's to come out and compete, we would be happy to have them," said Richardson.

The event will also feature the queen and princess of the furrow competitions. The queen of the furrow is open to those between the ages of 17 and 23 and the princess of the furrow is open to ages 11 to 16, as of January 1 this year.

"Those who are crowned are able to spend the year going around the county promoting the plowing match, the plowman's association, and women in agriculture," said Richardson. "It's a cool opportunity for a couple of young ladies in our community."

Both competitions require a one-to-two minute speech related to agriculture and an interview with a panel of three judges.

Additionally, the queen of the furrow competition requires contestants to plow and answer an impromptu question.
