CK politician called "man of the people" passes away

The mayor and council in Chatham-Kent are paying tribute to former local MP Rex Crawford, who passed away on July 20.

His obituary stated that he died peacefully at the Wallaceburg hospital at the age of 90 surrounded by his wife and three daughters.

Crawford was born in Detroit and was a former councillor and Reeve of The Township of Dover and became Warden of the County of Kent in 1987. He served as an inaugural council member of the municipality of Chatham-Kent from 1998-2003 and was the Liberal Member of Parliament for Kent from 1988 to 1997.

Mayor Darrin Canniff said Crawford lived a life of public service.

"From a township council member to a federal member of Parliament, his strong voice and his commitment to the people he served is something anyone would be proud of. You knew where you stood with Rex. He had strong opinions, but he always wanted to hear the other side of the issue. He could disagree with you and still respect you. We need more of that in today’s society," said Canniff. "His ability to connect with people on any issue is something everyone in public service should aspire to."

Canniff added that you could always count on Crawford and his experience as an original member of Chatham-Kent council helped the community through some very turbulent times.

The mayor also offered condolences to the family on behalf of council.

MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex Monte McNaughton said he will miss his mentor and friend.

"So sad to hear of the passing of former liberal MP Rex Crawford. Rex was a good friend, a mentor, and a respected public servant. He was a true man of the people. May he rest in peace. Prayers for his family," said McNaughton.

Visitation will take place at the Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home in Wallaceburg on Sunday from 5-8 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted at the Knox Presbyterian Church in Wallaceburg on Monday at 3 p.m. with visitation one hour prior.
