Chatham-Kent heat warning prompts cooling centres to open

Chatham-Kent is in for another couple of days of hot and humid weather.

Daytime cooling centres will be available at several locations in Chatham-Kent while a heat warning issued by Environment Canada stays in effect.

The weather agency says daytime temperatures are expected to reach 31 C Monday and Tuesday. There will be some relief in the evening with the lows expected to drop to around 21 C.

Municipal offices in Blenheim, Chatham, Ridgetown, Tilbury and Wallaceburg will offer space for people to stop in, sit, have a drink of water and cool off during regular business hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., read a statement from the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

Employment and Social Services will also offer the same service at its main office lobby on the first floor of the Community Human Services Building at 435 Grand Avenue West in Chatham from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Public libraries in Chatham-Kent are also offering free internet use and time to browse their collections as a way to beat the heat.

Hope Haven will offer services and a cooling station at its location at 183 Wellington Street West in Chatham from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well.

Its regular hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days a week.

In Wallaceburg, The James Street Drop-In Centre will offer services and a cooling station at its location at 719 James Street from noon to 9 p.m as well.

Its regular hours are 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.
