Charity road hockey tournament returns

A very popular 3-on-3 road hockey tournament is coming back to Ridgetown this summer.

The Tuukka Cup is set for August 27 and 28 at the East Kent Memorial Arena.

The tournament was started by Mike Boersma in honour of his cousin, Ronny Betterley.

"He passed away about four years ago from DIPG, a rare child's brain cancer," said Boersma, the tournament director. "So this is going into our third year this tournament."

Boersma says Ronny was a huge fan of Tuukka Rask and hockey.

"We played road hockey out in the shed, like almost every day with him, it was so fun. I would just like to see more kids remember that and have fun in his memory."

The tournament is open to those aged 7 to 17, and teams are guaranteed four games over two days. The deadline to register a team of up to 7 people is July 15. The winners gets their name on a replica of the Stanley Cup that is on display at the Ridgetown Arena.

Boersma said the tournament is also a big fundraiser.

"We're not only raising awareness, but so far we have raised over $25,000 for Childcan, Ronald McDonald House, and Children's Wish Foundation."

The public is invited to come out and watch the games. They have a BBQ, games, and prizes planned.

Information and registration forms are available on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/tuukkacup.
