Chatham hospital dealing with another COVID-19 outbreak

The Medicine Unit at the Chatham hospital has another COVID-19 outbreak.

The outbreak, declared by the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) on Friday, involves three cases and was reported to the media on Tuesday.

Two other outbreaks at the Chatham hospital, with a total of 10 cases, ended less than a week ago.

CKHA said it will continue working with Chatham-Kent Public Health to manage the outbreak until it's over. Public health staff are communicating with affected patients and families to trace contacts. CK Public Health will contact individuals who have been exposed and will inform them of the appropriate measures to take.

CKHA also said several infection control initiatives are underway to respond to the outbreak that will be followed until the health unit lifts the outbreak.

"Since the onset of this pandemic, CKHA has taken decisive and immediate action with the ever-evolving dynamics of COVID-19. The safety of staff, physicians, patients, care partners, visitors and the community at large, has and will remain the top priority," said CKHA in a statement.

Hospital officials continue reminding the community that the hospital remains a safe place to receive care and the public shouldn't hesitate to call 911 or visit the nearest Emergency Department if emergency care is need.

On Friday, CKHA reported 24 patients in the hospital with COVID-19. Four of them were being treated primarily for the virus, but none was in the ICU. The other 20 patients tested positive for COVID-19 when they were admitted.
