Two arrests after crash in Chatham

Two Chatham-Kent residents in their 20s are facing charges after police followed up on a traffic complaint on Park Street in Chatham.

Officers said they heard a vehicle was heading west on Park Street when it started swerving into oncoming traffic and the vehicle jumped the curb and hit a tree.

When police arrived, they allegedly saw a man talking to the driver before he walked away.

The woman who was driving was still inside the vehicle and the man was stopped a short distance away from the scene of the crash.

Police said their investigation showed that the man and the woman had both been released by the courts with a condition not to associate with each other and that the woman was also believed to be impaired by drugs.

They were both arrested and taken back to police headquarters and police said they allegedly found some suspected fentanyl in the vehicle, too.

A 26-year-old Chatham woman was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, failing to comply with her release conditions, and drug possession.

A 29-year-old Raleigh Township man was arrested and charged with breaching a probation order, drug possession, and two counts of failing to comply with his release conditions.

Both of the accused were set to be held in custody pending a bail hearing.
