Salvation Army challenges residents to give back

The Salvation Army Chatham-Kent is challenging residents to give back and challenge others to do the same.

The organization has launched its One Bag Challenge for the month of April.

According to Salvation Army CK Community and Family Services Manager Allie Matthews, the goal is to get people to purchase one bag of non-perishable donations for local food banks. From there, individuals are encouraged to challenge friends and family to do the same, creating a chain reaction.

Matthews said people are also encouraged to post the challenge on social media.

"We did this last year and it was pretty exciting," said Matthews. "There were some apartment buildings and offices that challenged each other. It was pretty cool to see the end results. So, we're hoping that takes off again this year."

Matthews said some of the items that are currently needed at food banks include canned vegetables and fruits, pasta and cereal.

Matthews added that hygiene products are also an in-demand item that can often be overlooked.

"We're supported very well through the Christmas season. As spring comes that kind of dwindles down," she explained. "Our need this year for people in the community who need help with groceries is just through the roof. "

Donation bags can be dropped off in Chatham at 19 Raleigh St., in Ridgetown at 7 Erie St. N, or in Wallaceburg at 600 Lowe Ave.
