Free Help CK helping prom dreams come true

Finding the perfect prom dress can be stressful, even more so if you don't have a big budget.

But a local organization is making sure every girl in Chatham-Kent feels beautiful on prom night.

Free Help CK is holding a "Say Yes to the Prom Dress" shop in the Downtown Chatham Centre, where everything is free and has been donated by the community.

"People donate dresses, and I've also had some businesses that went out and donated beautiful prom dresses to us," said Geri Hughson, founder of Free Help CK. "The girls come in and they pick a prom dress, they also get to pick shoes and jewellery. Then that day they get their picture taken saying 'Say Yes to the Prom Dress.'"

Hughson said the girls are then invited back for a special event on Saturday, April 30.

"We are setting up appointments and they come in and get their hair done, their nails polished, and then we're going over to the Retro Suites and they get their pictures done for free."

Free Help CK started the prom dress shop about four years ago and has given out 349 dresses, but they've been busy this year, and have already given out 28 dresses.

"We have a lot more girls that are coming in to get all the stuff they need, which is amazing," said Hughson."The community is great because every day we get new stuff. Any donations of cash that we get, we go out and buy new jewellery, or new purses, so that it's always something new in there for the girls that are coming."

The shop is open from 3-5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 12-2 p.m. on Saturday, or by appointment through their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/freehelpck.

Free Help CK is still looking for donations of shoes, accessories, and dresses. They can be dropped off at the mall, a bin is in front of the store on the first floor.
