Several months after announcing retirement, CK CAO still on the job

The outgoing Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) remains on the job in Chatham-Kent two months after a replacement was announced for the position.

Don Shropshire was originally set to begin his retirement in December, but said he's still on the job to ensure a smooth transition to new CAO Thomas Kelly.

Shropshire said there is lots of work to do and many issues to deal with at the present time and Kelly could use a helping hand.

"Thomas [Kelly] and I have been working on transition things for several weeks. We are all fully committed right now between the regular operational pressures that we have, the challenges related to COVID, and the stuff that we're dealing with in Wheatley," said Shropshire.

Mayor Darrin Canniff said having all hands on deck to ensure a smooth transition is paramount considering everything that is going on at the moment and keeping Shropshire on for a few more weeks will help.

"We wanted to have as much horsepower as we possibly could to put towards Wheatley and to put towards what's happening with COVID, etc. So, we wanted to make sure we had as many people there as possible and part of that was keeping the ankle bracelet on Don for another few weeks,' Mayor Canniff said.
