Suspicious person report leads to arrest

A call from a concerned citizen is to thank for an arrest in Chatham.

Around 9:15 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a report of a suspicious person call on St. Clair Street.

According to police, the person was found with several items from the Super Store. Further investigation revealed that the items had allegedly just been stolen from the store, which he was under court order not to attend.

The 51-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000, being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000 and one count of failing to comply with his release conditions.

After he was searched by police, the man was also found in possession of suspected fentanyl. As a result, he was charged with possession of a controlled substance. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Vehicle theft in Chatham 

A pair of Chatham residents will have to answer to multiple charges after allegedly stealing a vehicle on Monday morning.

According to police, a vehicle was left running outside of the Tim Hortons on Lacroix Street in Chatham around 8 a.m.

Surveillance video showed two people allegedly stealing the vehicle. Shortly after, police received a driving complaint with the same vehicle.

The suspects were located, arrested and charged with with theft of motor vehicle and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

The 25-year-old Chatham woman and the 41-year-old Chatham man were lodged in custody pending a bail hearing.

Break and enter in Chatham 

Police are looking for the person who broke into a house in Chatham.

According to police, sometime between Saturday and Monday evening, someone broke into the home on Copperfield Crescent and stole $2,500 worth of construction materials.
