TikTok trend targets high schools

Chatham-Kent police officers increased their presence at local schools on Friday as a result of a disturbing TikTok trend.

According to police, a post on the social media network circulated internationally that encouraged and "challenged" students to engage in violence towards their schools on December 17.

As a result, the Chatham-Kent Police said they were made aware and there was an increase in patrols around the schools as a precaution.

"The Chatham-Kent Police would like to remind the members of the public of the implications that can arise in regards to social media involvement and internet usage," police said in a media release. "Parents are encouraged to remain vigilant and educate their children. Media can be used for positive interactions, though improper usage can result in consequences."

Woman charged with stunt driving

A 29-year-old Chatham woman will be without a vehicle for a couple of weeks after she was caught allegedly going 60 kilometres over the speed limit.

According to police, an officer spotted the woman driving 141 kilometres an hour in an 80 zone Friday afternoon on Countryview Line.

The vehicle was stopped and the driver was issued a summons for stunt driving and given a future court date.

As a result, her licence was suspended for 30 days and her vehicle has been impounded for 14 days.

Pair of break and enters

Chatham-Kent police are investigating after a pair of break and enters across the municipality this week.

Police say sometime Wednesday evening, between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., unknown suspects forced their way into a building on 4th Concession Line in Romney.

Once inside the building, suspects stole two Dewalt drills, a Briggs and Stratton 3500 Generator, microscope tooling, two 20lbs propane tanks, and a flashlight. The estimated value of the property is around $2000.

Elsewhere, police say someone broke into a compound of a business in Chatham at some point Thursday evening and stole a large amount of scrap metal.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call Chatham-Kent police or Crime Stoppers.

Man charged with uttering threats

A 27-year-old Chatham man has a future court date after allegedly threatening his ex.

Officers said they responded to a domestic dispute on Friday afternoon. Through investigation, police learned that during a verbal argument, the man allegedly threatened his ex-partner.

He was arrested and charged with uttering threats before being released with a future court date.

Man charged with break and enter 

Chatham-Kent police didn't have to look too far to find the suspect in an alleged break and enter.

According to police, the man went to a pharmacy in Chatham late Wednesday night and allegedly broke two windows to get inside.

Through investigation, officers identified the man who was already in custody awaiting a bail hearing. Stolen property was also recovered as a result of the investigation.

As a result, the 31-year-old Chatham man was arrested for the updated charge of break enter with intent to commit theft and remained in custody pending the already scheduled bail hearing.

Man arrested on outstanding warrant 

On Friday afternoon, provincial police in Petrolia located a man who was wanted by the Chatham-Kent Police for failing to attend court.

The Chatham-Kent Police attended their location and arrested the man. He was released with a future court date.
