Off-duty firefighters rescue one from fire at Chatham-Kent home

Fire crews fought strong winds while working to put out a difficult structure fire in Blenheim on Monday afternoon.

Firefighters from Raleigh South, Raleigh North, Blenheim, and Merlin were called to a structure fire at 8097 Middle Line at around 2:30 p.m, but three off-duty firefighters were first on the scene.

They managed to rescue one person from the second storey of the building and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke in the area and said extremely high winds made firefighting efforts difficult.

Crews said the fire started in the garage attached to the house before it spread to the rest of the home.

The cause of the fire remains unknown and damages are estimated at $400,000.
