COVID-19 cases in Chatham-Kent take big jump

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit (CKPHU) is reporting 55 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday.

Only 26 previous cases were marked as resolved during that time, bringing the number of active cases up from 109 to 138. The last time there were that many active cases was on September 13, when there were 140.

There were no new deaths or hospitalizations, but there is a new outbreak at Harwich Raleigh Public School in Blenheim with three cases.

Mobile vaccine clinics for children 5 to 11 years old start Monday, with the first stop at Blenheim District High School from 3-8 p.m.

"Just to dispel some rumours out there that people are concerned we're going to schools to provide these vaccines to children without consent, that's not what's happening," said Dan Drouillard, a registered nurse with the health unit.

The CKPHU vaccination clinics for kids started just over a week ago at the Bradley Centre in Chatham, and they are continuing there Tuesday through Sunday.

Drouillard said they've gotten a lot of questions about safety concerns.

"We know that these shots are a third of the strength of the adult dose. Through the studies they've done there's been significantly less side effects, and combined with the eight weeks spacing in between, it's been found that there's even fewer side effects, even after the second dose."

Drouillard encourages people to that have questions to reach out to the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit.

"I encourage people to look up the information from credible sources. Our website is a great source of information, and we actually did a YouTube video maybe a week ago now, answering questions live, but it's up there on the CK Public Health YouTube page is anyone wants to check out that session."
