Dresden to transform into 'Christmas town' this holiday season

Community groups in Dresden are hoping to make Christmas a little merrier for everyone this year.

The return of the Christmas Night Market and Dresden Shines has sparked a massive collaboration in the community to shine brighter than ever.

Dresden Shines Steering Committee Co-chair Cindy Brewer said the whole town will be lit up with light displays and decorations to create a unique holiday experience for the entire holiday season.

"It started last year when we figured everybody needed a bit of boost, something to distract us," said Brewer. "Everyone got on board and we decorated everything."

The community kicked off the holiday season with the Dresden Shines lighting ceremony on Thursday.

"Almost everyone is working together to put on light displays and decorate," said Brewer. "Our goal is to become Southwestern Ontario's Christmas town."

The Christmas Night Market will take place on Saturday, November 27 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. in downtown Dresden. While the market is a one-day event, the holiday festivities will continue with the Dresden Kinsmen Santa Claus Parade on December 11 and the downtown’s Open Late ‘til 8 shopping event every Thursday until December 23.

Organizers are also encouraging Dresden and area residents to decorate their homes with lights as part of the Illumination Tour. The initiative will give residents and visitors the opportunity to drive throughout the community and enjoy the displays.

Brewer said the community will be continuing its neighbourhood cup competition as well. She said judging will begin during the first week in December.

'It's a fierce competition and it looks like the community is serious this year," said Brewer.

More information will be made available on the event’s social media pages as well as on Dresden’s official website.

"When you come to Dresden and shop our stores, it's going to feel like you've been to Christmas town."
