Municipality of CK getting residents in the holiday spirit

Chatham-Kent residents can now have a say in naming a fleet of snowplows that will take to the roads across the municipality this winter.

The municipality has officially launched the voting process for its snowplow naming contest.

Name ideas were accepted from October 26 to November 12. According to a media release from the municipality, over 1,000 names were submitted.

"I am blown away with the number and creativity of responses," said Mayor Darrin Canniff, "winter driving for many is not a fun experience but giving our residents an opportunity to help name our plows can brighten up the winter blues."

Due to the overwhelming response, the municipality will be naming 12 snowplows instead of six. Voting is open until December 10 and the 12 names with the highest votes will be declared the winners.

Each plow will be decorated with its new name by WINMAR Property Restoration Specialists, who are covering the costs of the program.

Meanwhile, the municipality is also getting in the holiday spirit by once again encouraging residents to decorate and admire how other people have decorated.

Last year, the municipality launched Light Up Chatham-Kent, a community-wide initiative that showcased different streets and areas decorated for the holidays.

Light Up Chatham-Kent is back for 2021 and residents can get involved by placing location pins on an interactive municipal map as well as adding a photo of their decorations. Residents and visitors can use the map to drive or walk around Chatham-Kent to view the decorations.

Additionally, anyone who places a pin on the map will be entered in the 12 Days of Christmas as well as the Best Light Display contests for chances to win a Canadian Tire gift card.

"We are so excited to share our Light Up celebration with Chatham-Kent," said Friends of Blenheim President Scott Tate. "It's wonderful to see all the communities coming together to celebrate the holiday season whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Diwali, Bodhi Day, Winter Solstice or the Season of Giving."
