With COVID-19 restrictions starting to lift, a weekly market that brought fresh local produce to those in need is wrapping up.
The Mobile Market, which connected communities in Chatham-Kent to fresh produce while supporting local farmers, started when lockdowns began a year and a half ago.
"We realized quickly that no matter where you were in the community or who you are, people were feeling isolated, and it was difficult to feel comfortable and access fresh and healthy produce," said Heather Tulloch, Community Food Connector for the Mobile Market. "This is why we expanded so quickly and ran longer than we ever expected."
Over the past 18 months, the Mobile Market delivered 15,635 boxes or approximately 156,000 pounds of produce to 15 communities across Chatham-Kent.
"We have met some amazing community members across Chatham-Kent and worked with many dedicated and passionate partners and volunteers to operate the Mobile Market," said Phillip Mock, Project Coordinator of the Prosperity Roundtable. "We never thought our little Market would grow and expand in the way it did. All I can say is thank you."
While the weekly markets are coming to an end, the team will be working with local partners to make sure that fresh, local produce is available to the community, especially during the holiday season.
Over the next two months, the Mobile Market will be giving the remaining donations to local associations, clubs, food banks, social services, and school groups.
