SIU investigating less-lethal firearm discharge by CK police

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is probing an incident involving Chatham-Kent police, where a less-lethal firearm was discharged.

According to the SIU, around 9:11 p.m. Wednesday, Chatham-Kent police responded to a hang-up call on Webb Street in Chatham.

When officers arrived at the scene, a 50-year-old man was found outside.

Attempts were made to negotiate with the man. The SIU said during the interaction, a taser was deployed, followed by a less-lethal round.

"The SIU’s mandate has been invoked under the Special Investigations Unit Act, 2019 because a firearm was discharged at a person," the SIU said in a media release. "A firearm is defined as a barreled weapon from which any shot, bullet, or other projectiles can be discharged, and that is capable of causing serious bodily injury or death to a person."

Paramedics responded and determined that the man did not sustain serious injury. According to the SIU, the man is currently in custody.

The SIU is asking anyone who may have information about this investigation to call 1-800-787-8529. The agency also asks anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload it through the SIU website.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.

Earlier this month, the SIU was called in to investigate the death of a man in Chatham-Kent after a police chase that ended with an OPP officer firing his gun.
