Cyclist fights off two men who tried to steal his ride

Chatham-Kent police are investigating after two men allegedly tried to steal someone's bicycle while he was riding it in Chatham Tuesday night.

Police said the cyclist was out for a ride in the area of Wonderwoods Park at around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when two men in a black vehicle approached him.

Officers said the cyclist did not engage the men and continued riding until the men cut him off on Queen Street and then tried to steal his bicycle from him.

Police said there was a physical altercation, adding that when the cyclist refused to hand the bike over to the men, they took off down Park Avenue.

Suspect uses stolen credit card in gift card scam

Chatham-Kent police are issuing a warning about a recent scam that targeted a pair of local businesses in the municipality.

Police said they received calls from two different floral shops in Chatham-Kent who had been duped by a scammer who ordered a bouquet of flowers and asked the business owners to add iTunes gift cards to the order.

The suspect then allegedly asked the owners to text him some pictures of the gift cards once they had been purchased and they did so only to learn later that the suspect had provided information from a stolen credit card.

Police are reminding business owners to be cautious when dealing with telephone orders, adding that you should make sure the person is paying with a valid credit card before you add any items to their order.

Woman accused of yelling at neighbour despite communication ban

A 44-year-old Chatham woman is in more trouble with the law after she allegedly yelled at her neighbour and made some threatening gestures even though she was banned from communicating with them.

Police said that took place Tuesday morning.

The woman was released from custody on June 29, 2021 with several conditions, one of which was that she wasn't supposed to communicate with her neighbour, so when officers found out that she had allegedly yelled at her neighbour, she was arrested again.

The accused was charged with failing to comply with her release conditions.

Dogwood tree stolen from Veterans Tribute Garden Park

Chatham-Kent police are appealing to the public for tips after someone stole a 6' dogwood tree from the Veterans Tribute Garden Park on Thames Street in Chatham.

Police said it was planted a couple of years ago and was taken sometime between July 3 at 6 p.m. and July 4 at 8 a.m.

It is valued at approximately $150.

Police find illegal drugs on man breaching house arrest

A 36-year-old man who was under house arrest is facing charges after police allegedly found some drugs on him while he was out for a walk in Wallaceburg.

Police said the man was released from custody on April 28, 2020 with several conditions, one of which was that he was supposed to stay inside his residence at all times, except for medical emergencies.

An officer on general patrol reportedly saw the man walking in the area of Elgin Street and Nelson Street in Wallaceburg at around 8 a.m. Tuesday, though, so he was arrested.

Police said they found some suspected methamphetamine and fentanyl on the man when they searched him.

As a result, the man was charged with one count of breaching his release conditions and two counts of drug possession.

Crash leads to impaired driving charges

A 60-year-old Wallaceburg woman is facing an impaired driving charge after a single-vehicle crash on Queen Street in Wallaceburg early Wednesday morning.

Police said their investigation led them to believe that the woman was driving under the influence of alcohol, so they took her back to police headquarters for some breath tests.

The woman was later charged with having a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit and was released from custody pending a future court date.
