Twin funnel clouds spotted near Dresden

A pair of funnel clouds were spotted parallel to one another near Dresden Wednesday evening while a special weather statement was put in effect for the area.

Environment Canada issued an advisory for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent just after 7 p.m. stating that conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds. The advisory has since been lifted.

The weather agency said several funnel clouds were reported within showers in the area and funnel cloud development was possible throughout Wednesday  evening.

Shortly before the weather advisory was issued, a pair of twin funnel clouds were spotted outside of Dresden. A video taken by a storm hunter shows two, well-formed funnel clouds that appeared to come close to the ground crossing over one another.

Environment Canada told Blackburn News that it's not clear if either of the funnels made touchdown.

Much of the region has experienced turbulent weather over the last several days as a hot and humid air mass has been moving through the area. These types of funnel clouds tend to generate from weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds, or weak thunderstorms.

Residents are advised to treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously and prepare to take shelter should one develop nearby.
