Tip about suspicious man leads to arrest

A 31-year-old man of no fixed address is facing charges after he allegedly stole from two stores in Chatham recently.

Chatham-Kent police said they found the man shortly after getting a call about a suspicious person in the area of Prince Street in Chatham at around 3 a.m. Thursday.

At that time, officers learned that the man was wanted in connection with a shoplifting incident at Sobeys last month and further investigation showed that he was also wanted in connection with a theft from 7-11.

The accused was charged with two counts of theft and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime and was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Laptop reported stolen from business in downtown Chatham

Chatham-Kent police are appealing to the public for tips after someone reportedly stole a laptop from Van Zelst’s Market on King Street East in Chatham.

Officers said they learned that the laptop was reported stolen after they responded to an alarm at the business at around 2 a.m. Thursday.

Speeders stopped on Longwoods Road

Police are reminding drivers to slow down and obey the speed limit -- and they issued some tickets to several motorists on Longwoods Road Wednesday morning to drive the message home.

Officers said they charged ten drivers with speeding during that enforcement initiative.
