Police seize rifle after searching residence

A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged with firearms-related offences after police allegedly found a .50 caliber rifle in his residence even though he wasn't supposed to have any guns.

Chatham-Kent police said they executed a search warrant at the man's residence early Wednesday morning after receiving some information that the man had a firearm in his possession, contrary to a Prohibition Order.

Officers said as a result of their investigation, the man was charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless storage of a firearm, and violating a Prohibition Order.

Police said he was also wanted for uttering threats, possession of ammunition contrary to a Prohibition Order, and failing to attend court.

He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Wanted woman arrested during suspicious person investigation

A 48-year-old Chatham woman who was wanted on several outstanding warrants found herself back in police custody -- albeit briefly -- after police allegedly connected her to an attempted theft from a local business.

Police said they received a report shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday about a suspicious woman attempting to steal property from a business on Longwoods Road in Chatham.

Officers said they were able to find the woman hiding in the washroom of a business on Grand Avenue East shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Once officers identified the woman, they also learned that she was wanted on some outstanding warrants.

She was taken into custody pending a bail hearing and later released with a future court date.

Youth accused of assaulting family member, damaging home

A 14-year-old youth has been arrested and charged after police were called to a family dispute at a residence in Chatham.

Police said they received the call on Tuesday and learned that the youth had allegedly assaulted a family member and previously caused some damage in the home.

As a result, the teen was arrested, charged with assault and mischief and taken into custody pending a bail hearing. He was later released with a future court date.

Woman arrested in domestic violence investigation

A 26-year-old woman has been arrested and charged after she allegedly assaulted her common-law husband.

Police said they made the arrest after they were called to a residence in Tilbury Tuesday night.

The accused was later released with a future court date.

Prohibited driver stopped in Chatham

A 56-year-old Tilbury woman who wasn't supposed to be behind the wheel has been arrested and charged after a traffic stop in Chatham Tuesday night.

Police said an officer pulled a vehicle over just before 11 p.m. Tuesday on Merritt Avenue in Chatham and arrested the driver after learning she was banned from driving.

The accused was charged and later released from custody pending a future court date.

Police will hang onto her vehicle for a little bit longer, though. It was towed from the scene and impounded for 45 days.
