UPDATE: Investigation continues into "dangerous" package found in Chatham

Chatham-Kent police are appealing to the public for tips as their investigation continues into a suspicious package that was found outside of a residence on Park Avenue West in Chatham.

Police were called to the scene at around 2:30 p.m. Monday and closed down Park Ave. W. between Wedgewood Boulevard and O’Neil Street for public safety reasons. They also evacuated homes in the immediate area for several hours.

Officers called in the OPP Explosive Disposal Unit to help with the investigation, adding that the device was disabled after the package was deemed "dangerous."

Everyone who was temporarily displaced by the investigation was able to return home at around 10 p.m. Monday and police notified the public via Twitter just after 12 a.m. Tuesday that Park Ave. W. had fully re-opened to traffic.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Cole Abbott at colea@chatham-kent.ca or 519-380-6024. Anonymous callers may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) and may be eligible for a cash reward.
