Suspicious man runs from police, arrested after foot chase

A 24-year-old Chatham man who wasn't supposed to be out of his home alone is facing charges after he allegedly led police on a foot chase through Chatham Sunday morning.

Police said they arrested the man after they received a report of a suspicious man in the area of Wellington Street East and Adelaide Street in Chatham at around 9 a.m. Sunday.

Officers said when they arrived at the scene, the man allegedly took off running, making his way through several backyards and jumping over fences before he was taken into custody on Park Street.

Police said they were able to identify the man and learned he was currently bound by several conditions, one of which required him to stay in his residence at all times unless he was accompanied by his surety.

As a result, the man was charged with failing to comply with his release conditions.

CKPS kick off police week

Chatham-Kent police are encouraging residents who want to give a special thank you to police personnel this week to do so from a safe distance.

Police Week runs from May 9 to May 15, 2021 this year and celebrates the work of front-line officers, 9-1-1 communicators, civilian staff, and all other members of the police service.

The theme for the week is "Working Together to Keep our Communities Safe."

Chatham-Kent police Chief Gary Conn says the current lockdown means CKPS personnel won't be able to engage with members of the public like they usually do, but he's still encouraging you to reach out to say thanks.

“Police Week was first observed in 1970 and coincides with the Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is recognized internationally on May 15. This year, we honour our police officers and personnel for the extraordinary work they do every day in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic," said Chief Conn. "We are inviting the public to reach out through social media or other means that use appropriate social distancing to thank our police officers and members for all they do to keep our communities safe."
