Man accused of stealing vehicle, running from police

A 25-year-old Wallaceburg man is facing charges after police allegedly chased down a stolen vehicle and the man who was driving it.

Chatham-Kent police say they got a report that the vehicle was stolen in Wallaceburg at around 9:30 a.m. Thursday and managed to track it down on Dufferin Avenue.

Officers called in OPP for help as it crossed the bridge to Walpole Island.

The driver allegedly took off running after the vehicle stopped but he was arrested following a short foot chase.

The man police arrested was charged with theft possession of stolen property and dangerous driving. He was later released pending a future court date.

Blenheim man accused of using elderly woman's debit card

A 40-year-old Blenheim man has been arrested and charged after he allegedly used an elderly woman's debit card without her permission.

Police said the woman called officers on April 29, 2021 to report some fraudulent transactions on her card and through their investigation, officers learned that a man who the woman knows used the card to make some purchases without her authorization.

The accused was arrested on Thursday and charged with fraud-related offences. He was later released pending a future court date.

Woman found hiding in VIA Rail station bathroom

A 27-year-old woman is facing charges after she allegedly violated her release conditions by meting with a man she was supposed to stay away from.

Police said they found the pair together while they were following up on a tip about a suspicious person inside the VIA Rail train station on Queen Street in Chatham at around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

Officers said when they were entering the train station, they saw a man leaving the bathroom.

When officers checked the bathroom, they then allegedly found the woman hiding behind the bathroom door.

After learning that the woman was bound by conditions not to communicate with the man who had just left the bathroom, officers arrested her.

The accused was charged with two counts of failing to comply with her release conditions and she was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Suspended driver charged after hit and run

A 38-year-old Chatham man is facing charges after he allegedly took off after causing a collision on Lacroix Street near Grand Avenue in Chatham.

Police said they were called to the scene of the two-vehicle crash at around 1 p.m. Thursday, adding that they found the driver who was responsible a short distance away on Thames Street and pulled him over.

No injuries were reported as a result of the collision.

The accused was charged with careless driving, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and driving while under suspension.

His vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded for seven days and he'll also be required to attend Provincial Offences Court in June.

Suspended driver stopped in Ridgetown

A 33-year-old Sarnia woman who wasn't supposed to be behind the wheel has been charged after she was allegedly caught driving in Ridgetown.

Police said an officer on general patrol pulled a suspicious vehicle over Thursday night on Main Street West and learned that the driver had been suspended for unpaid fines.

As a result, she was charged with driving while under suspension, her vehicle was towed from the scene, and she'll be required to attend Provincial Offences Court later this month.

Failing to comply with release conditions

A 57-year-old Chatham man who was released from court in November last year is in more trouble with the law after he allegedly left the house without his court-appointed surety and showed up at a place he had been banned from visiting.

Police said the man allegedly went to an address on Park Street in Chatham last night without his surety and that violated two of his release conditions.

As a result, he was arrested and charged with two counts of failing to comply and was set to be held in custody pending a bail hearing.
