Impaired driving charges

Chatham-Kent police have taken a few allegedly impaired drivers off the road lately, including three in the past 24 hours.

Police said a vehicle nearly hit two cyclists in Chatham Tuesday afternoon in the area of King Street and Lacroix Street. Officers on patrol said they saw the vehicle leave the road and drive onto the sidewalk.

The vehicle was stopped by the officers and they believed the driver was drunk. They also said he resisted arrest and was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

The 24-year-old Chatham man is charged with having a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit and resisting arrest.

Tuesday night, a 55-year-old Shrewsbury man was arrested and charged with drunk driving after being stopped because the officer believed he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Investigators added the suspect was not only charged with having a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit but was also charged with driving with his licence suspended and driving with no insurance.

A third impaired driving charge was laid Wednesday morning in Blenheim following a traffic stop on Talbot Trail where a 67-year-old Blenheim man was allegedly driving high on drugs and was arrested. Police said he was taken to police headquarters where a Drug Recognition Expert conducted an evaluation and determined the man was impaired by a drug.

Police said the 36-year-old man went to a woman’s home in Chatham to retrieve two dogs from the backyard Tuesday night and added it was not the first time that he had communicated with the woman.

The man was released from court with several conditions on March 23, 2021. Two of those conditions stated that he was not to attend a specific residence in Chatham or have contact with the homeowner or her daughter.
