Suspended driver arrested for allegedly stealing truck

A 49-year-old Chatham man who was suspended from driving is facing more charges after he allegedly stole someone's truck.

Police said they found the man in the truck while they were following up on a report of an "unwanted man" at Walmart in Chatham on Wednesday.

Officers said the man left the store before police arrived, but they managed to catch up with him and pulled him over on St. Clair Road.

The man was initially charged with driving while under suspension and driving a vehicle that wasn't equipped with an ignition interlock.

Police said the truck was towed from the scene taken to an impound lot.

Then, Thursday night, officers were contacted by the owner of the truck, who reported that the man had stolen his vehicle.

As a result of that new information, the accused was arrested and charged with four more offences -- two counts of failing to comply with his probation order and one count each of theft of a motor vehicle and possession of property obtained by crime.

He was later released from custody pending a future court date.

Deer involved in three crashes in CK

Chatham-Kent police are reminding drivers to be on the lookout for wildlife during dawn and dusk hours after a trio of crashes Thursday night.

Police said officers were called to three collisions between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday -- all involving deer.

Officers said the first crash was on River Line and the next two were both on Longwoods Road between Caledonia Road and Centre Side Road.

Police are offering the following tips to help drivers to prevent those types of collisions:

- Scan the road ahead, from shoulder to shoulder

- Use high beams at night, when possible, to watch for glowing eyes of animals

- If you see one animal cross the road, expect to see more as others may follow

- Stop as safely as possible. Never swerve suddenly as this could cause you to lose control of your vehicle and result in a more serious collision
