Heavy rainfall puts a damper on sunny weather

Sunny conditions in the region will soon be replaced by dark clouds and heavy rainfall as Environment Canada calls for up to 50 millimeters of rain in parts of southwestern Ontario.

A special weather statement is currently in effect for Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, Sarnia-Lambton, London-Middlesex, as well as Oxford and Elgin Counties.

The national weather agency said periods of rain are expected to start Thursday night into Friday.

The amount of rainfall is expected to be in the 20 to 40 mm range, however, some areas could get up to 50 mm of rain. Thunderstorms are also possible in some areas.

Forecasters said winds from the northwest are expected to gust up to 80 kilometres per hour in many areas by Friday afternoon.

The rain is expected to taper off by noon on Friday.
