Dog tag deadline approaching

Dog owners in Chatham-Kent have until the end of the month to get their 2021 municipal dog tag.

Tags must be purchased by March 31, and you can buy your dog tag online at www.pawr.org

"If they go to our website and just go to the shop section," said Animal Control Services Manager Ben Van Eyk. "They fill out the form there, we get the order in the office and we mail it right to your house. It's great for COVID restrictions."

Dog tags can also be bought at any municipal service centre, the PAWR shelter in Chatham, or by calling 3-1-1.

The cost is $28 for a dog that is spayed or neutered, and $38 if they're not. Plus, there is a $10 late fee if you wait until April. But Van Eyk said the revenue helps local animals.

"It helps funding animal services, which includes the shelter in Chatham and Wallaceburg, which helps get adoptions, and stray cats and stray dogs home. It also helps fund animal control services."

Getting a dog tag now could save you some money in the long run.

"You could be charged a $240 fine if we come across a dog that isn't licensed," said Van Eyk. "Although we do like to work with people and we do use that as a last resort."

Any dog that is older than four months needs a tag.
