BREAKING: COVID-19 outbreak at Fairfield Park resolved

A COVID-19 outbreak at a nursing home in Wallaceburg has been declared as over after nearly two months.

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit cleared Fairfield Park Nursing Home of its outbreak status on March 4.

An outbreak was declared at the home on January 10, and since then a total of 100 COVID-19 cases have been reported among residents and staff.

"Despite this good news, all ongoing infection prevention and control measures will remain in place to ensure the continued health and safety of our residents and staff," said Fairfield Park Administrator Tracey Maxim. "We would like to take this opportunity to highlight the amazing efforts and continued dedication of our staff who have worked tirelessly in the last few week’s service of our residents."

Fairfield Park will continue to work with the Public Health Unit over the coming days to resume many activities at the home. Maxim said some of those activities will involve a celebration with cake, streamers, balloons, and music to mark the milestone.

"We look forward to more social time for our residents, but our goal will be to find the balance between restoring some sense of normalcy while also protecting the safety of everyone in the home," she said.

Maxim previously said Chatham-Kent residents have also stepped up to show support for those who work and live at the nursing home by sending message of support and dropping of items or food.

In an emailed statement to Blackburn News, Maxim also thanked organizations such as the Chatham Kent Public Health, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Erie St. Clair LHIN, Alzheimer’s Society, and the Canadian Red Cross for support during a difficult time.

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit also reported 12 active cases of COVID-19 on Thursday after two new cases were confirmed and one case was marked as resolved.

The province reported 994 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Thursday, along with 10 deaths related to the virus.

Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliot said as of as of 8 p.m. Wednesday, 784,828 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered.

According to the CK Public Health Unit's website, 3,810 vaccine doses have been administered locally.
