Possible firearm pointed at Chatham worker

Police are asking the public's assistance in identifying a man who brandished a possible firearm at a person in Chatham.

It started around 1 a.m. Saturday morning when the suspect was seen entering a fenced enclosure and trying to break into a locked dumpster at a business on Grand Avenue.

When an employee approached the man and asked him to leave, he allegedly pointed what appeared to be a firearm at her and fled the area.

The suspect is described as having an average height and build. He was last seen wearing a colourful face mask, grey jogging pants, a black coat with a light coloured hoodie, a winter hat and bright orange and yellow winter gloves.

Man charged under Reopening Act 

A Harwich Township man will have to pay a fine after allegedly not following provincial lockdown regulations.

Around 6 p.m. Sunday evening, Chatham-Kent police responded to the report of a social gathering in a garage at a residence on Charing Cross Road.

The 36-year-old homeowner was charged with failing to comply with the Reopening Ontario Act and issued a ticket.

Anyone who didn't live at the residence was asked to leave.

Pair of impaired driving charges laid in Chatham

Chatham-Kent police were able to get two allegedly impaired drivers off the roadways over the past 24 hours.

On Sunday morning around 11 a.m., police responded to the report of a suspicious person in a vehicle parked in downtown Chatham.

Officers located the vehicle and believed that the man was driving while under the influence of a drug. As a result, the man was arrested and transported to police headquarters where an evaluation was done by a drug recognition expert officer. The officer believed the man was impaired by a drug.

While the man being searched by police, he was also found in possession of suspected methamphetamine and fentanyl.

The 51-year-old Chatham man was charged with impaired driving, driving while prohibited and two counts of drug possession. He was eventually released from police custody with a future court date.

Elsewhere, around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, police responded to the report of a possibly impaired driver on Sandys Street in Chatham.

Officers were able to locate the vehicle and pulled it over. Police believed the man was driving while under the influence of a drug and he was arrested, brought to police headquarters and evaluated by a drug recognition expert. As a result, the officer believed the man was impaired by a drug.

The 29-year-old from Chatham was charged with impaired driving. He was also arrested in connection with a fraud-related investigation and charged with several fraud-related offences.

He was released pending a future court date.

Break and enter at Chatham business 

Police are hoping to find whoever broke into a Chatham variety store this weekend.

Sometime between 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday, an unknown suspect or suspects forced their way into Stirling Variety, causing about $500 in damage.

One inside, around $3,000 worth of cigarettes, lighters and lottery tickets were stolen.

Vehicle stolen in Chatham Township

Chatham-Kent police are appealing to the public for tips after a pickup truck was stolen in Chatham Township.

Sometime between Saturday at 10:30 p.m. and Sunday at 8:30 a.m., the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado was stolen from a residence on Darrell Line.

The truck is dark grey in colour and was last seen with Pennsylvania license plates YYZ9 300.

Trio of warrants executed 

Chatham-Kent police were able to cross several names off their wanted list on Sunday afternoon.

First, a man wanted for property-related offences and failing to comply with his probation order was located in Sarnia.

The 43-year-old from Walpole Island was arrested and eventually released with a future court date.

Elsewhere, police arrested a woman who was wanted for assault, causing a disturbance and committing an indecent act.

The 35-year-old of no fixed address was released with a future court date.

Later in the afternoon, a man was located by police in Tilbury who was wanted for fraud-related offences. The 30-year-old was arrested before being given a future court date and released.

Police seek to identify man 

Police are looking for the public's assistance in identifying a man as part of a theft investigation in Tilbury.

According to police, three Samsung cellphones were stolen from the Shoppers Drug Mart.
