Allegedly drug-impaired driver charged crash in Chatham

A 25-year-old Howard Township man is facing an impaired driving charge after allegedly hitting a hydro pole and two parked vehicles in Chatham Wednesday afternoon.

Police said they were called to the scene on Colborne Street and learned that the man had lost control of his vehicle before crashing into the pole and the two other vehicles, which were both unoccupied at the time.

Through further investigation, officers believed the man was driving under the influence of a drug at the time of the crash, so they took him back to police headquarters where a Drug Recognition Expert evaluated him.

As a result of that evaluation, the man was still believed to have been impaired by a drug, so he was charged accordingly.

He was later released pending a future court date.

The damage caused by the crash was estimated at $20,000.

Teen boy arrested again hours after his release

A 15-year-old boy is spending some more time in police custody after he allegedly hitch hiked his way back to Shrewsbury even though he had been ordered not to go there.

Police said the youth was released from custody back in November of last year with several conditions, one of which required him to stay away from a specific cottage in Shrewsbury.

Despite that order, officers said the youth left home Wednesday morning and was later seen at that same cottage.

As a result, the teen was arrested, charged, and later released pending a future court date. He was also ordered not to return to Shrewsbury.

Police said within three hours of his release, the youth allegedly hitch hiked his way back to Shrewsbury. He was arrested again, charged again, and taken into custody pending a bail hearing.
