Theatre reopens for Christmas movies

After being closed for nine months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chatham Capitol Theatre is reopening.

The theatre will reopen to the public for Christmas movies starting Wednesday, December 16.

"We've technically been able to host events, but obviously concert presenters are not quite ready to get back into that until some more of the restrictions are lifted," said Heather Slater, manager of arts and culture for the municipality of Chatham-Kent. "We haven't had any full-scale events in the Capitol yet, so movies are the first thing back."

In order to keep everyone safe, Slater said a number of safety measures have been put in place. Plexiglass has been installed in certain areas and only 50 people are allowed at each movie showing.

"We are blocking off every other row in the theatre, and requiring people to sit with their group, but then space themselves out form the next group," said "Mask usage will be required as per the bylaw, so we think people will feel very safe."

Attendees will be required to wear a mask the whole time, and there will be limited concessions for sale.

People are encouraged to pre-register online at https://www.chathamcapitoltheatre.com/.

The cost is $5, or people can use their annual movie pass. If you have a 2020 movie pass, you can either get a refund or redeem it for a 2021 movie pass for free. 2021 movie passes are also available for $40.

Slater adds that the Capitol and the Kiwanis Theatres are both available for groups to rent.

"Every event that comes to the theatre we'll be looking at very carefully with public health. We work very closely with them, they do walk through all of our venues, and let us know if we're doing everything the best way possible, and if we're clear to go ahead, and know that we can keep everyone safe."

Here is the schedule for Christmas movies at the theatre:

Wednesday, December 16 - National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation at 2 or 7 p.m.

Thursday, December 17 - The Holiday at 2 or 7 p.m.

Friday, December 18 - It's a Wonderful Life at 2 or 7 p.m.

Saturday, December 19 - Polar Express at 2 p.m. and Nightmare Before Christmas at 7 p.m.
