K9 officer trades badge for bone

A loyal member of the Chatham-Kent Police Service is officially off the job.

The police service congratulated Canine Officer Arry on his retirement on Wednesday. The intention to retire the police pooch was announced back in March, and police said a new canine unit was being trained.

The eight-year-old pup born in Slovenia joined the CKPS in 2013.

"On behalf of everyone here at the Chatham-Kent Police Service, we would like to thank K9 Arry for his exemplary service," read a CKPS media release.

Arry and his handler, Constable Rick Bertok, were recently recognized for their years of service, which included 75 arrests and the seizure of approximately $128,015 worth of illegal drugs.

Over the past seven years, the two have competed in competitions and have earned several awards for criminal apprehension, searching, obedience, agility, detection and tracking.

Chatham-Kent police previously said Constable Mike VanKesteren and a new canine officer would take over the gruelling positions, which involve being on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
