Chatham man arrested twice for stealing from the same store

A 29-year-old Chatham man is facing a handful of charges after he was arrested twice in the same day for stealing from the same local grocery store.

Chatham-Kent police said the first time they received a call about the man was Wednesday morning after he had allegedly stolen some electronics worth about $200 from the Real Canadian Superstore in Chatham.

Police said the man took off on a bicycle, but officers were able to catch up with him a short distance away.

He was charged with theft and possession of property obtained by crime and then released with a future court date.

That wasn't the end of his alleged crime spree, though.

According to police, the man returned to the same Superstore later that same afternoon, even though he was now banned from attending that location.

Officers said this time, the man allegedly stole a package of cooked ribs, ate them, and left without paying for them.

Police said from there, the man allegedly went to Walmart -- another store he was banned from attending -- and stole a mountain bike and some electronics worth about $280.

Investigators said the man took those items to a nearby pawnshop and tried to sell them. Officers caught up with him a short time later and took him into custody for a second time.

He was then charged with two more counts of theft, two more counts of possession of stolen property, and two counts of failing to comply with his release conditions. He was set to be held in custody pending a bail hearing.
