Volunteers busy sorting through 'The Gift' donations

There is no estimate yet in regard to how much was donated during "The Gift" campaign this past weekend, but a spokesperson said it likely did surpass the amount donated during the May 16th Miracle earlier this year.

Volunteers across Chatham-Kent collected donations (such as toys, non-perishable food items, and clothing) from people's doorsteps on Saturday in an effort to help families in need this holiday season.

Spokesperson Luke Davidson said the amount donated is "amazing."

"They're still tallying it together because of the fact that we have so many different drop-offs but it's far-out than what the Miracle [raised] 100 per cent, which is amazing," said Davidson. "[With] the Miracle it was almost 700,000 pounds of just groceries, this is gifts. When I walked into [the Gift Factory on Monday] I couldn't believe how much it looked like a Toys "R" Us warehouse. It really is amazing!"

While volunteers continue to sort through donations, organizers are still looking to hear from those in need.

Davidson said they encourage people to reach out if they could use some extra help. Residents who know a family in need can also reach out on their behalf in case they're not sure of the supports in place or are hesitant to come forward.

"That being said, they still need help. So we ask you, please let us know who they are," he said. "We don't want anyone to go without during the holiday season nor afterwards. We have more than enough toys, more than enough food for everyone."

Davidson said residents should first advise a family in need of the options available by registering through a local organization. But if a family is not comfortable with that option, they can contact "The Gift" directly.

"At that point, come to us and we will make sure that they do not go without," he said.

Davidson said additional volunteers are no longer needed for the sorting and distributing phase of the campaign. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only a certain number of volunteers can be inside the designated buildings or "gift factories".

"The Gift" organizers can be contacted directly at thegiftck.ca@gmail.com.
