UPDATE: Flood warning issued for Erie Shore Drive

Residents are reminded to avoid the shoreline as heavy winds are forecasted over the next 24 hours.

On Saturday morning, the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued a flood watch for  Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair shorelines. On Sunday morning, the watch was upgraded to a warning for Erie Shore Drive.

"There is currently flooding along Erie Shore Drive in Chatham-Kent. There is water on many properties and around some of the homes. Floodwaters have made it onto the roadway in several locations," stated a release from the LTVCA. "All non-essential traffic should avoid the area to ensure that municipal staff and/or emergency services can access the area if required."

Current forecasts suggest that flooding will peak around 2 p.m. and could continue into the evening.

A gale warning is currently in effect for both the lakes and Environment Canada issued a wind warning for most of southwestern Ontario.

Winds are predicted to reach 75 kilometres an hour by Sunday afternoon with gusts of up to 115 kilometres an hour.

Meanwhile, forecasts are calling for 10 to 20 millimetres of rain overnight Saturday and into Sunday.

"Wave forecasts are predicting waves on the open waters of Lake Erie of 2 to 3 metres Sunday morning and 3 to 5 metres Sunday afternoon," stated a release from the LTVCA. "Even in nearshore areas, wave forecasts predict waves could reach 2.5 metres. Wave forecasts for Lake St. Clair are predicting waves on the open water could reach 2 metres in height near noon Sunday.  In nearshore areas, wave forecasts are predicting waves in the 0.5 to 1-metre range depending on the final wind direction."
