Alleged Chatham bank robber arrested after shoplifting incident

The law has come calling for a 40-year-old man accused of robbing the Royal Bank on King Street West in Chatham earlier this month.

Chatham-Kent police said they arrested him while they were following up on a shoplifting complaint at Sport Chek in Chatham Thursday afternoon.

Officers said the man allegedly grabbed some clothing at the store valued at approximately $370 and then took off without paying for it.

Police said they were able to catch up with him a short distance from the store on his bicycle and later identified him as the suspect in the robbery at RBC and two other shoplifting incidents at local pharmacies this month.

The accused is now charged with three counts of theft, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime, one count of assault, and one count of robbery.

He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.
