Record highs may be on the way this weekend

With this warm and sunny stretch of weather, Environment Canada predicts temperature records could be broken in areas of southwestern Ontario.

Meteorologist Gerald Cheng said the Chatham-Kent, Windsor, and London areas will come close to or perhaps break daily record highs because of a warm front from the Gulf of Mexico pushing further north than usual. Highs are expected to hit 20 Celcius or higher until Tuesday. Cheng said daily highs in southwestern Ontario are forecasted to be 10 Celcius above normal for this time of year.

He also said the volatile weather in the south with all of the hurricanes has something to do with the warm air mass but it's mainly the jet stream rising further north.

"Of course when we talk about southwestern Ontario, it is the southernmost place in Canada. So, temperatures have to get really high into the 20s for us to break records and we could be close. So, we will see," said Cheng. "The sea surface temperatures have been quite warm but it's really that jet stream pattern that's allowing that warmth to surge to where we are and if the jet stream sinks south then we won't see that warmth and that's what's going to happen eventually."

Cheng said a powerful cold front expected on Wednesday could bring some strong wind gusts with it but no flurries yet.

"When we get temperature swings like that it means it's going to be a powerful cold front. At least I don't see snow at this point but there could be some strong winds accompanying that cold front," he said.

Southwestern Ontario had a snow storm last Remembrance Day and Cheng can't rule out flurries for this year either. He said the most challenging weather to predict in the fall and winter is the Great Lakes area. He added snow accumulation is "tricky" to forecast because there could be snow in one area and not any 10 kilometres down the road.

The temperature is going to swing 20 Celcius from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday night. Area highs are expected to range from 19 Celcius on Saturday to 23 Celcius on Monday.
