Confirmed case of COVID-19 at Chatham elementary school

The local health unit is reporting that a student or staff member at McNaughton Avenue Public School in Chatham has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Chatham-Kent Public Health has notified the Lambton Kent District School Board of the confirmed case on Wednesday.

"Chatham-Kent Public Health is working closely with the school community and is contacting any individuals [students and staff] who may have been in potential contact with the virus," the health unit said in a statement posted to the elementary school's website.

Those who are not contacted by the health unit have not been in close contact with the confirmed case.

The school will remain open at this time.

The health unit will not disclose if it's a student or staff member who has contracted the virus for privacy reasons. The health unit has also not stated how many students may have been exposed to the virus.

The confirmed case at the Chatham elementary school comes two days students and their families at at Chatham-Kent Secondary School were notified of a probable case at CKSS.

The Lambton-Kent District School Board also has two other confirmed cases of the virus within its schools — one at Tecumseh Public School in Chatham and one at a secondary school in Sarnia.

As of Wednesday, there are currently 32 active cases of COVID-19 within the municipality of Chatham-Kent, with three people currently hospitalized. The health unit has reported 406 positive cases of the virus and three deaths since the pandemic began in March.
