Molotov cocktail thrown in Chatham

Chatham-Kent police are investigating after someone threw a Molotov cocktail at a residence on Jeffrey Street in Chatham.

Officers said the flaming concoction was thrown toward a bedroom just before 1 a.m. on Monday.

The Molotov cocktail burnt itself out but it did melt the siding around a window, which caused about $2,000 worth of damage.

Loud muffler tips off police

Two people are facing drug-related charges after police stopped a vehicle on Creek Road in Chatham. Officers initiated a traffic stop on Monday night because a vehicle had an "excessively loud muffler."

The driver and passenger allegedly left a glass crack pipe and cannabis in plain view.

During a search, police also seized suspected fentanyl from the passenger, a 24-year-old Chatham woman. She was charged with drug possession. The driver, a 40-year-old Thamesville man, was charged with drug possession, driving with cannabis readily available, driving with a dirty plate and improper muffler.

The two people have future court dates scheduled for January 7, 2021. ---------

Several tickets issued to drivers

Another traffic enforcement blitz in Chatham-Kent has resulted in 25 tickets being handed out for various offences under the Highway Traffic Act.

Police were out monitoring local roadways on Monday. Several tickets were also issued during a traffic blitz over the weekend.

---------- Break and enters reported in Wheatley

A couple of commercial buildings and a storage area in Wheatley have been targeted.

Chatham-Kent police said unknown suspect(s) entered three properties on 1st Concession Line, sometime early Monday morning.

At one of the commercial buildings, the steering column of a pick-up truck was damaged. The damage estimate was $1,300.

Several tools were stolen from another commercial building but the items were found nearby. Damage caused during the break-in is estimated at $300.

Also, two trailers were broken into at a storage area. The stolen items were found nearby and returned to the owner. Damage from the break-in is estimated at $200.

Damage caused during break-ins

Police are investigating a couple of unrelated thefts in Raleigh and Orford Township.

A break-in reported at a barn on Talbot Trail sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning caused about $400 worth of damage. Two Milwaukee battery chargers and two socket sets worth $350 were reported stolen.

Meanwhile, $5,000 worth of building supplies were reported stolen from a residence under construction on Goodbrand Line in Orford Township. It's believed the break-in, which caused $1,000 worth of damage, happened sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

Mischief investigation

Officers are looking into a mischief complaint in Chatham involving three trucks.

Police said someone tried to enter the storage compartments of three trucks over the weekend and caused about $5,000 in damages. The vehicles were parked in a fenced compound of a business on Riverview Drive.

Chatham-Kent Police Service is highlighting another one of its members as part of an initiative to let residents get know who they are behind the uniform.

Constable Alena Fiala earned a four-year NCAA hockey scholarship to a university in Michigan. While playing the sport, she also earned a degree in Criminal Justice and History.

Fiala still finds time to play hockey through women’s leagues and tournaments.
