Flood watch issued for areas along Lake Erie

A strong wind warning for western Lake Erie has prompted a flood watch for areas along the shoreline and Erie Shore Drive.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued a flood watch on Wednesday afternoon as wind speeds are expected to pick up.

Conservation officials said wind speeds are expected to peak overnight as winds from the southwest are predicted to gust well over 65 kilometres per hour. The windy weather could last into Thursday morning.

Waves on Lake Erie may reach two metres in height overnight because of the windy conditions.

Based on forecasts, flooding is expected to impact Erie Shore Drive from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, possibly even throughout the day on Thursday. There might also be flooding in other south-facing shoreline communities.

The LTVCA is reminding residents who live near Lake Erie to be careful near the shoreline as it may be slippery.

The flood watch will remain in effect until Friday.
