Rail safety blitz results in charges, fines

A couple of pedestrians will have to pay up after fines were issued during a rail-safety law enforcement initiative in Chatham-Kent.

CN police and Chatham-Kent officers partnered together for "Operation Clear Track" on Thursday.

During the enforcement blitz, two pedestrians were issued $125 tickets for trespassing.

“Trespassing on railway property is a violation of Federal law and can result in arrest and fines up to $25,000 and six months in jail," said CN police Const. Brady Arnold. "Walking on or beside the tracks or crossing the tracks at any location other than a legal crossing is considered trespassing.”

Three drivers were also charged during Thursday's initiative. One driver was charged with speeding, a second was accused of distracted driving, and the third was charged with stunt driving. The third driver was allegedly caught driving 103 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone.

"Chatham-Kent has a number of rail lines that cross through our community, said CKPS Traffic Sgt. Jim Lynds. "By working with our partners at CN Police through education and enforcement initiatives, we strive to prevent injuries and death in and around the rail systems in our community.”

The rail-safety enforcement initiative is held on Rail Safety Week. Further details about the campaign can be found by clicking, here.
