Positive COVID-19 case confirmed at university in Ridgetown

A student who lives outside of Chatham-Kent but attends the University of Guelph's Ridgetown Campus has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit confirmed the positive test result on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials at the school have been working with the public health unit by providing contact information and support for students and staff who had contact with the positive case.

“The health and safety of our staff, students and community are top priorities,” said Ridgetown Campus Director Ken McEwan in a statement.

People who had contact with the student have been contacted by public health staff and have been advised to get tested for COVID-19 and to self-isolate.

“We have implemented a number of protocols to minimize the spread of COVID-19, including self-screening, self-monitoring, alternate delivery learning and cohort classroom organization, in addition to the safety measures recommended by Public Health. I want to extend a personal thank you to our community -- both on and off-campus -- for your patience, cooperation and understanding during this unprecedented time,” said McEwan.

The health unit did not release any information about where the student who tested positive resides. There are currently two active cases of COVID-19 listed on the Public Health Unit's website as it only references Chatham-Kent residents. The last positive test result listed was on September 14. There are currently no outbreaks listed at Chatham-Kent institutions, workplaces, or schools.
