Shoplifter's brush with the law ends in arrest

A 33-year-old man of no fixed address is facing charges after he allegedly walked out of the Walmart in Chatham with an electric toothbrush that he didn't pay for.

Chatham-Kent police said that took place Monday afternoon, adding the toothbrush is valued at $140.

Officers were given a physical description of the man -- who took off on a bicycle -- and they were able to track him down a short distance away.

The accused was arrested and charged with theft and possession of property obtained by crime. He was later released with conditions and a future court date.

Police said the toothbrush was also recovered and returned to the store.

They weren't supposed to be together

Two 21-year-old Chatham residents are facing charges after police found them together when they should have been apart.

Police said the investigation started when an officer on general patrol pulled over a vehicle on Barthe Street in Chatham early Tuesday morning.

At that time, the officer learned that the driver was currently wanted for failing to comply with his release conditions. In addition to that, there was a woman in the vehicle with him who he had been ordered not to communicate with.

As a result, a 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with failing to comply with his release conditions. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

A 21-year-old woman was also arrested -- she was arrested and charged with facilitating a breach and obstructing police by providing a false name to the officer. The woman was later released pending a future court date.
