Flood watch issued ahead of windy weather

A flood watch is in effect for several areas as winds are expected to become stronger throughout the day on Sunday.

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) issued a flood watch Saturday night as southwesterly winds over Lake St. Clair and throughout the watershed are expected to gust up to 60 kilometres per hour by Sunday afternoon.

"Winds from a southerly or westerly direction have the ability to create a backwater effect, slowing the flow of water out of the Sydenham River and elevating water levels in the Wallaceburg area," read a release from the SCRCA.

As a result of the windy conditions, residents who live along the Lake St. Clair shoreline may experience increased wave action.

The possibility of thunderstorms on Sunday also poses a risk for flooding.

"High amounts of rainfall in a short period of time can lead to increased runoff and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas," read the release.

Some minor flooding is also possible in natural floodplain areas.

The flood watch issued by the SCRCA will remain in effect until Monday.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority also issued a flood watch for Erie Shore Drive and Lighthouse Cove due to Sunday's windy weather. The LTVCA had previously issued a month-long flood watch for the Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair shorelines at the beginning of July.
