Flat tire stops hit and run suspect

A 73-year-old man's run from the law in a stolen car came up flat late Tuesday night after one of the tires ran out of air.

Chatham-Kent police said their investigation started after a driver lost control of a vehicle at around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday on Richmond Street in Chatham and knocked over a light pole before taking off.

Police said an officer on general patrol who saw the vehicle leave the scene attempted to pull the driver over, but the man kept going.

The officer eventually called off the chase for public safety reasons after the vehicle blew past both a stop sign and a red light at a high rate of speed.

Police were able to track the vehicle down on Kent Bridge Road near Fairview Line after it got a flat tire.

Through their investigation, officers learned that the vehicle was reported stolen from the Halton region and that the man was currently suspended from driving for medical and remedial reasons.

He was arrested and charged with several offences including two counts of driving while suspended along with one count each of careless driving, failing to remain at the scene of a collision, flight from police, disobeying a stop sign, failing to stop for a red light, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and possession of property obtained by crime.

The accused was set to be held in custody pending a bail hearing.

A crime of convenience

Chatham-Kent police have arrested a 24-year-old Chatham man after he allegedly took off with a vehicle that was left running outside of a local convenience store.

Police said the man allegedly stole the car after he walked out of the store in Chatham and saw that the vehicle was unattended.

Officers said they were able to find both the man and the vehicle at a local motel a short time later.

The accused was charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of property obtained by crime. Police said he was also arrested on an outstanding warrant for failing to comply with his release conditions.

Failing to comply with release conditions

A 38-year-old Chatham man is in trouble with the law again after allegedly going to a local store without his surety.

Chatham-Kent police said the accused was released from court with several conditions at the end of February -- one of those conditions required him to have a specific person with him whenever he left his residence.

The man was allegedly spotted in a store in Chatham without that person with him, though, so he was arrested and charged with failing to comply with his release conditions.

Two arrests on outstanding warrants

The law has some calling for two 33-year-old Chatham men who were both wanted by Chatham-Kent police.

In the first case, the accused was arrested Tuesday morning after he was allegedly out past his court-imposed curfew over the weekend.

In the second case, an officer on general patrol spotted a man who was wanted for domestic-related offences walking in downtown Chatham Tuesday afternoon, so he was also arrested.

Both of the accused were taken into custody pending bail hearings.
