UPDATE: Evacuation order cancelled after tanker truck fire

Residents near Prairie Siding in Chatham-Kent are now allowed to return to their homes following a tanker truck fire.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services said firefighters responded to the area of Grande River Line and Jacob Road after a fuel truck caught fire.  Fire officials said the blaze started in the cab area of the truck but the driver was able to quickly escape.

An evacuation notice was issued for the area and residents were asked to leave their homes due to the possibility of a fuel explosion.

Fire crews kept the fuel tanks cooled while they extinguished the fire and the situation was reported to be under control shortly before 8 p.m.  Residents were then allowed to return home.

No injuries have been reported.

As a result of the fire, police closed all roads surrounding the area while fire crews were at the scene. The Prairie Siding bridge remained closed as of 10 p.m.
