COVID-19 case count increases slightly in CK

There are four new cases of COVID-19 in Chatham-Kent.

CK Public Health reported the new cases on Monday afternoon. There are a total of five active cases as of Tuesday afternoon with no new cases reported on Tuesday.

CK Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Colby said three of the new cases are family contacts of local workers at an Essex County agricultural operation and they were already isolated before their test results came in. The fourth case is not connected to the other three. Colby said it's a person who lives in Chatham-Kent but works in Mississauga and was also isolated.

Dr. Colby added COVID-19 remains "under control" in CK and the local public health unit remains "ever vigilant."

As far as municipal pools, he said they will not open this summer, but splash pads likely will open in Phase 3. Colby said keeping pools closed was a tough decision but it was made in the best interest of public health. He said maintaining social distancing at the pools and keeping everybody safe would be very difficult to do. The municipality has previously said it's difficult to hire lifeguards halfway through the season. Colby also previously said playground equipment will reopen when splash pads are open.

Dr. Colby also said bar patios seem to be following the health and safety rules since reopening during Phase 2 in mid-June.

"We are investigating bar patios on a complaint-received basis but there have not been many complaints, so I can say that by and large they are compliant," Colby said.
